Sandy Alcantara to make third Opening Day start for Miami Marlins

by

JUPITER, Fla. — Sandy Alcantara will make his third Opening Day begin Friday when the Miami Marlins open the season at San Francisco, supervisor Don Mattingly mentioned.

Alcantara, 26, turns into the third Marlins pitcher to start out three consecutive Opening Days, becoming a member of Josh Johnson and Josh Beckett.

A scarcity of run help contributed to Alcantara’s 9-15 document final season, when he posted a 3.19 ERA over 33 begins. In 5 main league seasons, the right-handed Alcantara owns a 20-34 document with a 3.49 ERA in 86 appearances, 79 begins.

“I think he’s still getting better and he has room to get better,” Mattingly mentioned. “The whole part of Sandy’s game here, from his routines, his work in between starts, his bullpens, everything’s become more precise. He has a lot of expectations for himself.”
